Chongqing Travel Tips

⚠️ Important Reminders

  • Bring Comfortable Shoes: Chongqing is built on hills — endless stairs and steep slopes. Your feet will thank you for proper footwear.
  • Navigation is Tricky: GPS struggles with Chongqing's 3D layout. A location might be 50m horizontally but 100m vertically away. Ask locals for directions.
  • Summer Heat Warning: Temperatures regularly exceed 38°C in July-August. Carry water, use sunscreen, and seek air-conditioned breaks. Evenings are perfect for exploring.
  • Hot Pot Etiquette: Use sesame oil (油碟) to cool food and reduce spiciness. Don't be afraid to ask for "wēi là" (微辣/mild spicy) — it's still plenty spicy!
  • Hongyadong Tip: The most photogenic view is from Qiansimen Bridge, not from inside. Visit after dark (7:30 PM+) when illuminated — it's breathtaking.
  • Three Gorges Booking: Cruises range from 3-4 day luxury ships to local ferries. Book at least 2 weeks ahead in peak season (April-October).
  • Cash & Payments: WeChat/Alipay dominate. Cash is rarely used in the city. International credit cards are accepted at major hotels and tourist sites.
  • Fog Factor: Winter fog can delay flights and affect river visibility. Build buffer days into your itinerary, especially for flights and cruises.
